If this is in fact true, I would love to see Usain donate this to the Jamaican government and we can either put it in Parade, Sam Sharpe square on one of the intersections by Heroes circle. The symbolism of the wall, Usain's performance in Berlin as well as the historical value of such a nice piece of the wall is great, we could definitely use that and make it a big deal.
(It is a chunk of the Berlin Wall decorated with Bolt's image, appropriate for an athlete whose world records in the 100 and 200 meters shattered the apparent limits of human performance in this 20th year since the fall of an enormous barrier to human interaction.
This token of the city's esteem for Bolt is 12 feet tall and 4 feet wide and weighs 1.7 tons. That will be tough to lug home even for the man who carried the 2009 worlds that ended Sunday to the front pages of newspapers around the world) Taken from some article
I have always hoped that one day Ethiopia would give us an obelisk from their Axum site representing the eternal friendship between our two countries, that could also be placed in Heroes circle or in the middle of New Kingston or something like that.
These type of symbols are very important as a long term permanent symbol to our people of things important to the nations psyche and give special relevance to who we are, a physical cultural anchor of some sort outside of the stories, legends that we carry around and are passed down but we sometimes forget as time passes by.
The one I really would love to see is a 50-100 ft statue of black granite of Sam Sharpe on a 50 to 100 ft two or thre tiered platform on that hill overlooking Mobay looking to the west, that would truly make Mobay an instantly recognizable place with that monument, with broad steps up to it from the Doctor's Cave beach side. Just dreaming out loud, the value of that to Mobay and JA would be immense, the cost would also be immense as well but the long term benefits far outweigh the cost.
BTW I am not sure if most Jamaican people much less the rest of the world recognize Sam Sharpe for what he really brought to Jamaica and the world.
1. The man behind the most organized Slave rebellion in the British Empire that brought down the first and biggest block of the institution of slavery in the western world ending slavery in the British empire within a few years of that rebellion.
2. He espoused a doctrine of non-violence and laying down of tools paralyzing the biggest slave economy in the British Empire, doing this long before there was a Gandhi or a Martin Luther King.
