  • Rice Production In Jamaica:

I was unpleasantly suprised that Jamaica imported most (or all ) of the rice consumed. This is bad!

I recalled several college classmates (including St. Aubyn Bartlett) being sent to Guyana and other rice producing countries for training in the 80's.

And 'we' still can't plant rice.~~~SIGH~~

I hear there are new strains that do not require "paddies" but that will grow on regular farm land; our best areas for rice production I think are still under cane. Just my impression...is this fact?

The government had a big stink with Guyana and they decided to test rice farming. Based on what I heard it was successful and they intend to grow 20% of the rice used locally by encouraging small farmers to grow.

I am glad you see the oppurtunities in Agriculture and Tourism

Speaking of opportunities, I hear the Breezes hotel on Gloucester Avenue has been shut down. What do you know about that? I thought the tourism was booming!?!? What gives?!

maybe you can't ask Butch Stewart. Hotels in Ja have shut down even in tourism growth period. And where did you hear tourism is booming?

I guess it must be Bartlett shutting it down

The root of the problem can be traced to the first two words in the 2nd to last sentence...

I notice you fail to answer or respond when your propoganda is not working.

What are you thanking me for? Because I say Bartlett is doing a good job it means tourism is booming?

                  Rice production is labor intensive.

If i lived in Jamaica--and decided to avail myself of this business opportunity, I would require no less than 100 acres of suitable land.

My system of procuction would be close to fully mechanized.

                    More intensive than sugar cane?

Hopefully a few people will be employed. What I hate seems to be the worst is working in swamps.

Sass, there is a varity of Rice that does not grow in standing water, furthermore, you have to create Paddies with sluch, not swamp.

We eat too much rice in Jamaica...stick to fibrous starches...yam, green banana, breadfruit, sweet potato....we can NEVER compete with large-scale rice producing countries....IF we MUST grow rice then go for the higher priced strains of basmati, jasmine etc...FOR EXPORT....get teh cheap rice from Guyana...or south east Asia.
