<SPAN class=news_body><SPAN>Making his contribution to the State of the Nation Debate in the Upper House, <SPAN id="clicksor_sp_senator nicholson" onmouseover='return ClxLaD("senator nicholson",event)' onmouseout='ClxTMo("senator nicholson")'>Senator Nicholson</SPAN> argued that while Prime Ministers enjoy the advantage of calling the election, there are counterbalancing factors.</SPAN>
Senator <SPAN class=kLink style="FONT-WEIGHT: 400; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: blue! important; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana,Arial; POSITION: relative">Nicholson</SPAN> contended that the fixed term system lacks flexibility.
He suggested that in some cases there may be good reason for a Prime Minister to call election before the end of the full term.
This includes the need for a fresh mandate or to make changes within the party that is in Government.
Senator Nicholson argued that such changes can be readily accommodated in the current system.
He said the variable date approach exists within the Westminster system as apart of a set of rule that have long standing vintage.
