  • Don1, yuh haffi read dis Newsletter editorial

    http://jamaicaobserver.com/editorial...OF_CARACAS.asp

I fell out of my bed after I read this:

"While we cannot condone RCTV's overtly anti-Chavez news coverage, we find it just as difficult to ignore the president's anti-democratic act against the station."

    This was me:

Who the hell is ((we)) Caricom, we note, has been very silent on this very critical issue
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

I notice that you specifically addressed your comment to two fellow posters who, like you, apparently dislike the Jamaica Observer newspaper.

While your message was clearly not directed at me in any way, after reading the thread I find myself, in a sense, forced to reply. Regardless how we choose to regard the Observer newspaper (and I’m not interested in defending this often reckless publication at this point), your thread-starting post, Mosiah, is one of the clearest examples of why.... (you know what, let me delete the last few words of this sentence)!

What can I say when supposedly intelligent individuals who, I assume, have a knowledge of post-1950s history of our hemisphere in particular as far as dictators and the suppression of their native people are concerned, take such a ridiculous position against a very timely and certainly very relevant newspaper editorial? Or maybe some of us are taking this position because it reflects this particular newspaper’s point of view (as any editorial is designed to do)?

Mosiah, whether you accept it or not, Hugo Chavez’s actions in his position as leader of an increasingly militarized nation is likely to have more far-reaching consequences for freedom of speech and for the free exchange of ideas in his country than any silly position taken by RCTV!!! From my perspective, Chavez is increasingly becoming a cause for concern in Latin America, a region that has over the past fifty years often failed its people. Of course, being the beggars (literally speaking) that Jamaica, Guyana and the governments of several other CARICOM nations have become, is it any wonder that CARICOM is silent on the issue?!

          Historian,

I respect your views on the wider issue and even agree with many of your points. I can't speak for Mo but I suspect you may find him in general agreement with your position....he can clarify if he chooses.

The point of our likkle exchange was not to address the wider issues..important as they may be.

The point was to demonstrate the hypocrisy of an openly partisan newspaper which shamelessly pushes the personal causes of the owner....to wit the Jamaica Observer....feigning criticism of another publication for apparAntly doing its own version of the same thing.

          Priceless.

Don1, I completely forgot that I had posted this comment this morning!!! I came online about two times since posting my comment here, but each time I stayed in the Other Sports section.

Thanks for explaining what you meant. Put in this context, I can now understand fully what you (and Mosiah) meant, as well as appreciate the irony of that Observer editorial (lol). Thanks for taking the time to explain .
