Jamaica fighting for place in travel competition Tuesday, 28 July 2009 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } In the face of a serious downturn in tourism, Jamaica is struggling at third place to win host country to the Travelocity Gnome. st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } Jamaica is lagging behind with 13%, with Hawaii in the lead at close to 50%, followed by Cancun which is close to 40%.

A visit from the gnome could be exactly what the tourism industry needs at this time as the Travelocity Gnome provides global feedback on the attractive features of the destinations it visits.

It provides potential visitors with a sense of the full holiday experience in that country.

Jamaicans can win host status by voting for Jamaica at votetravelocity.com.

Tuesday is the last day for voting.

Some countries, like Mexico, have come to value the socio-economic importance of the gnome so much so that radio disc jocks promote the vote frequently.

The visit of the gnome could help Jamaica to recover from several blows recently delivered by the UK.

A recent UK television feature on Jamaica by journalist Trevor McDonald claimed that Jamaica was predominantly a country of drugs, crime and hopelessness.

Furthermore, with the threat of a steep air travel and environmental tax scheduled to be imposed on tickets to the Caribbean in autumn, visitor arrivals could fall.

With the tax on visitors to the US less than it is for visitors to the Caribbean, the already alluring United States is likely to be even more attractive to travellers.

The UK-based Caribbean Council has stated that the British will revisit the Air Passenger Duty bearing the Caribbean's welfare in mind.
