to my legalise prostituion debate. Again, I am not saying that legalising prostitution will answer Jamaica's many problems, but.....

The Olympics and sex have always been active bedfellows

Purists who think an athlete opening a brothel to fund an Olympic campaign will damage the Games' image are being naïve The Olympics and sex have more in common than purists would like to believe. Photograph: Adrian Dennis/Rex Features

News that a taekwondo athlete in New Zealand is attempting to fund his bid for 2012 Olympic glory by opening a brothel in Auckland has been greeted glumly by local sports chiefs, seen his business partner get thrown out of his parents' home and resulted in his deselection from this year's world championships. But anyone who thinks that linking the Olympics with sex might in some way harm its image is being naïve – the two are already active bedfellows, entangled as firmly as any copulating couple.
Before we get on to the behaviour of athletes who do make it to the event, Logan Campbell is not the first – not even the first New Zealander – to use sex as a means of reaching it. Ten years ago, in the same city, the cyclist Nicole Tasker was lap-dancing her way to Sydney. In 1992, Kiwi swimmer Toni Jeffs' journey to Barcelona was sponsored by the owner of a strip club. It is a bit late for the nation's sporting authorities to start playing the prude.
Campbell, who should probably be more embarrassed about the fact that his sporting career was entirely inspired by the hit movie The Karate Kid, estimates that he needs to raise £120,000 in two years if he is to successfully compete in London and can't think of any better ways of doing it. "Some people on the team will not think highly of me for doing this," he says. "If they saw this place and how it's operated, they'd change their mind."
At anything up to NZ$2500 (£970) a night, Campbell and his partner are not precisely patrolling the seedy end of the vice business. They employ only "smart, attractive" girls, and "don't treat them like pieces of meat".
Having finished 16th in Beijing, after losing in the first round to the eventual bronze medallist, Campbell has experienced life in the Olympic village. It appears that the main differences between it and his brothel is that the latter has only 14 rooms and their use is not free. In Sydney, athletes famously used the 70,000 free condoms organisers had distributed so quickly that another 20,000 had to be ordered – and they had all gone three days before the party ended. There were 10,651 athletes there. On one occasion three prostitutes were found in the village itself, guests of a "major American television network".
In Athens 10,568 athletes got through 130,000 condoms. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City local Mormons took to the streets when news broke of the 250,000 condoms that were being trucked into town. As that event progressed, vending machines were being restocked every two hours. This is what happens when thousands of young, single, beautiful people spend lots of time together with nothing much to do and lots of free parties to attend.
Marco Buechel, a skier who competed for Liechtenstein in Salt Lake City, described one relationship he enjoyed there. "You can contact any athlete, even if you don't know them at all," he reported. "They give you a list when you get there. Everybody uses it. I saw this beautiful ski racer, from Greece of all places. She had the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. I sent her an email, in English. Her reply was very short: 'Not good English. Want meet you.' We tried to talk, which wasn't very successful, and then we started to drink, which was much more successful."
The result? "It was very beautiful," he said. "A beautiful international incident."
This isn't the place for a debate about the morality of prostitution. Some might commend Campbell's entrepreneurial vim, some might find the whole business repugnant, but if anyone at the IOC thinks this kind of thing reflects badly on their event, they will probably find their sheets weren't so clean in the first place.

    You misread my position!

This is an interesting article, Jangle.

I must say this, however: There appears to be a slight mix up here (lol). I cannot recall ever stating a position on this forum as far as the legalization of prostitution is concerned. In fact, I have never ever discussed this topic, not even in passing! What I have consistently argued against are (a) dancehall in its current form and (b) another product which I won’t even name because the last thing I want is a resumption of that really tiresome debate.

As far as prostitution in Jamaica is concerned, I have absolutely no problem with Parliament legalizing it. In fact, if I were asked to vote on the matter in a referendum, I honestly think that I would vote “Yes” provided two clauses are enshrined in such a Bill: (a) legalized prostitution should be open to Jamaican women ONLY; (b) legalized prostitution should be carefully monitored by specific authorities (as it can easily descend into a sex slavery industry).

There is no way that I, as a Jamaican, am going to sit by quietly while such an avenue is open as well in Jamaica for attractive women from the USA, Haiti, Russia, Trinidad, Venezuela or wherever else they might originate, to come in and take bread away from the mouths of Jamaican women!!! Our women have already suffered too much from unemployment problems stemming from attitudes in our overly macho, insensitive society! I’ll be damned if I wouldn’t write letter after letter to the print media, etc. protesting any competition for Jamaican women in a legalized prostitution industry!

You might recall a discussion we had here about a year ago on the matter of night club dancers from Russia and Haiti. I’m sure Bricktop will remember, as we had a heated debate on the matter. In fact, I was so angry that I even researched Jamaica’s immigration and labour laws and posted portions here.

Jangle, don’t let my stance on certain topics give you the wrong impression of me . I am most definitely no moral crusader.

I must admit that I am surprised by your response. I thought I was the lone crusader here on this topic. I agree with you 100% on this two points:

        (a) legalized prostitution should be open to Jamaican women ONLY; (b) legalized prostitution should be carefully monitored by specific authorities (as it can easily descend into a sex slavery industry).

That depends on which nationality we would be catering to. The idea is to cater to tourists and not necessarily Jamaicans. The same thing goes for the casino.

Cater to tourists? Really? How you'd go about preventing a Sickko from spending him money pon a Stacious? As fi the casino, how you'd prevent a Mosiah from buying a pass and going to the casino resort and guh play crap?

This talk about catering only to tourist is only a pipe dream.

Lazie, yes, many men would certainly demand the variety that a racial and nationalistic mixture would definitely bring. However, we cannot forget the primary objective of any move to legalize prostitution. This objective would be to open another avenue for women in Jamaica to make a living.

I’m looking at this from the perspective that there are many unemployed women in Jamaica, and while there is absolutely nothing about prostitution that would give a woman any great self-respect and self-esteem, the fact is that there are women who would do it in order to better their lives (pay bills, buy a house, etc.). So, many women would undoubtedly be helped economically by this!

Now, can you imagine if we legalized prostitution and made it “open season” at the same time to women from elsewhere? My goodness, we would have to increase the number of immigration officers in Kingston and Montego Bay and provide a couple more lanes at the immigration desks! Do you think that it would be fair to allow, for example, women from Brazil (where there are a trillion women who are unemployed) to come and compete with our women in the land of their birth?

Makes no sense legalizing prostitution merely to give foreign women jobs!! If this is the case, then let things remain as they damn well are at present. If Jamaican men want an American woman, then they can take a plane to Florida or New York or California. If they want a Latino, then South and Central America are next door, and Cuba is just 90-something miles away!

                    This makes no sense!
