  • If this is the case the minister have all right

st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } Horrendous conditions at the Port Antonio Infirmary in Portland, have been exposed in a detailed report following a recent investigation by the public health authorities in the parish.

The findings by the Portland Public Health Department came under the microscope Thursday, after State Minister for Local Government Robert Montague was tongue lashed by members of the public following his tirade at the Matron of infirmary earlier this week.

A public health inspector assigned to the Portland Health Department carried out in-depth inspections at the Port Antonio Infirmary two weeks ago, which revealed the appalling and sickening conditions under which the inmates are cared for.

The inspector's July 7 report disclosed that the toilet facilities on two of the inmate wards were non-functioning and that water from the shower flowed constantly onto the compound.

According to the report, waste water settles at the side of one of the bathroom facilities and active mosquito breeding was observed.

The public health inspector also documented an offensive urine stench, fly infestation and uncovered water container on the wards occupied by the inmates.

According to the inspector's report, an examination of the kitchen revealed insect droppings in the cupboards and a lack of hand washing facilities for the staff.

There were two work tables without suitable surfaces on which food was prepared, one had a cardboard covering while the other had pieces of linoleum.

The inspector also found that the mesh on the extractor fan was greasy and needed to be replaced.

An overflowing grease trap and disconnected plumbing fixtures were among the many faults detailed in the report.

Inspections of the dry goods storage area revealed flaking paint on the store room wall and food products stored in a haphazard manner.

In the laundry room, the inspector noted that both mechanical washers and two dryers had been out of operation for over a year, and that staff members were observed wearing open toes and flip flop slippers while washing.

It was also observed that washed linens were not adequately stored to protect them from insects, rodents and dust.

On the outside, the health inspector documented unwanted household items, tyres and old zinc strewn all over the compound.

The report detailed 39 recommendations aimed at correcting the problems at the Port Antonio Infirmary.

And I guess it wsa the matron's duty to order a work crew to construct the building and fit out the place nicely.

He should either apologise or resign. Or both!

No but clearly basic proceedures are not been followed by the Matron and the many staff at the facilities.

and what of the Matron and the parish council?

The Public Health Dept. should have locked down the damn place!

Wonder who is the Medical Officer of Health for the Parish? In my sojourn at the Health Dept. I worked with Dr. Christine Olive Moody, and Dr. Dorothy Blake and on there watch there is no way that place could be operational in that condition.

...have all right to tongue lash himself for the appalling physical condition of the buildings! He should put himself on the same level as the matron and get on the ball to move the building from its 'condemned' state to one of which the public and the residents can be proud.

...and because of that, the minister has a right to address her the way he did.

Well, the other matrons better get going, because I am sure their facilities are not much better.

Funny how we want to race up the matron about accountability, but accountability on the part of the parish council or govt? - cho!

              Apologise or leave!

...the Minister should give the matron hell for not keeping the place sanitary...such as is humanly possible in that dilapidated and clearly unsafe building that present tremendous challenges to the good health of the residents...

...but equally he should prostrate himself while in sackcloth and ashes at his unforgiveable neglect of the poor residents and for subjecting them and the staff to that living environment.

Worthless fellow! Should be ashamed of himself!

The matron say a mango season why the flies deh bout

                    Wouldn't that make you mad?

Somebody not doing their job here and there is no excuse for it. I can understand many of the things that has happen is the government fault but if the matron is not doing the basic things then why is she going to be concerned while the place fall apart?

Use that word all yuh want. The minister, a PUBLIC SERVANT, was totally out of line addressing the matron the way he did. In any decent country, he would have been history by now and some decent person would be put in charge to oversee and fix the undeniable problems at the infirmary. If it means the matron has to step aside too, so be it!

To me the fact that these conditions are highlighted and hopefully remedy are of higher concerns. How long these condition existed? What were the effort made to correct them? What was the minister told before his visit?

These are important question to even answer before understanding his tirade.
