  • Bunting calls for increased Commissioner powers

The opposition spokesman on crime in Jamaica, Peter Bunting is supporting the call for increased powers for the Police Commissioner.
Making his presentation in the sectoral debate yesterday, Mr. Bunting said greater authority for the Commissioner would allow him more control over disciplinary matters in the force.

He argued that the current existing organisational structure in the police force does not allow the Commissioner effective control over personnel and finance.

Mr. Bunting also suggested that given the resource constraints in the justice system the government should consider shelving plans for the Office of a Special Prosecutor and instead focus on strengthening the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

According to him, a safe and just society cannot be achieved without the successful implementation of a Justice System Reform Agenda.
This involves reducing the backlog of cases in the court system and providing more resources to the Office of the DPP.

The opposition spokesman on crime also pointed to the need for the relevant agencies to focus on improving the social infrastructure in poor communities as one way of dealing with the country’s crime problem.

Where were these suggestions beforre 2007.

They seem quite reasonable, but I fail to see why these are now epiphanies from the party that served longest in independent Jamaica!
