Parent, teacher fight at school - Women brawl after child was not given a prize
What was supposed to be an evening of celebration turned into a spectacle after a parent and a teacher knocked fists during a prize giving ceremony at a Corporate Area preparatory school last week.
THE STAR heard that the teacher was attacked by a parent who thought that her child was due for a prize, but was unfairly left empty-handed at the ceremony.
Effors to speak to a school official proved futile, but a teacher at the school who witnessed the incident, spoke on condition of anonymity. She said that the parent got upset after her child did not get a prize despite ending in a tie with another student for first place.
According to the teacher, plans were made for the child to get a prize but for some reason the child did not.
THE STAR was told that the parent had received a letter from the school, inviting her to the function and informing her that her child would be rewarded.
While there and after realising her child was left out, the parent reportedly got up and went for her child. It was then that she slapped the teacher across the face and a fight ensued.
When contacted by THE STAR, chief education officer in the Ministry of Education, Jasper Lawrence, said he was not aware of the incident.
He said even though the school is a private institution, the ministry would still have the power to recommend sanctions against the teacher, if necessary. However, he said that an investigation would have to first be carried out to see exactly how the incident unfolded. He said he would make contact with the Registrar of Independent Schools to see if a report of the incident had been filed there.
