WITH murders having fallen from 152 in May to 112 last month, the overall figure for the year is now 740, lower than the 833 reported at this point in 2008 but still higher than the 711 in 2007, according to the latest crime statistics unveiled by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) today.
However major crimes have continued to trend up over the past three years, reaching a total of 5,572 for the year up to the end of June. This represents a 23.6 per cent increase over the first first six months of 2008.
Only murders, down 11 per cent, and rape, down 19 per cent, fell during the first half of 2009.
Meanwhile shooting and carnal abuse recorded single digit increases. Robbery, 19 per cent, breaking, 87 per cent and larceny, 128 per cent recorded significant increases.
