Effective August 1 some of the responsibilities of the Department of Local Government will be transferred to the island's Parish Councils.
The calculation of pension benefits, street lights and the management of minor water supply systems are some of the functions which will fall in the hands of the Councils.
State Minister for Local Government, Robert Montaque, says this is part of the reform exercise being carried by the Office of the Prime Minister.
He pointed to street lights as one of the areas that his Department is looking forward to handing over.
"Payment of streetlight will be returned as well because right now from the Ministry we pay for every streetlight in Jamaica whether they are working or not and there are some that have not worked for months, some for years, but yet we have to pay JPS for a service we don't enjoy," Mr. Montaque said.
He was speaking on Wednesday night at a town hall meeting in Clarendon.
