  • Paulwell supports nuclear energy

The opposition spokesman on energy resurrected the issue of nuclear energy as a possible means of easing the country’s dependency on oil, during his contribution to the sectoral debate yesterday.

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson-Miller had made the suggestion in the budget debate earlier this year.

However, the prime minister Bruce Golding said the government had ruled out the idea because of the environmental concerns, high capital costs as well as the other challenges associated with such a venture.

Yesterday Mr Paulwell blasted the Government for dismissing the idea.

He also contended that it is safe to have nuclear reactors located in the country.

Mr Paulwell pointed to research, which he said found that an individual would have to live near a nuclear power plant for over 2 thousand years, to get the same amount of radiation exposure as that from a single diagnostic medical x-ray.
