Witness jailed in perjury rap
By Laurel J. Sweet
A judge yesterday brought the gavel down on an uncooperative witness, doling out eight years for perjury to a man who had tried to trade his testimony in a 14-year-old boy’s murder for leniency on a gun charge.
Prosecutors say Kyrice Grady, 23, had threatened to “dummy up” if they didn’t play ball. After refusing to cut a deal, they put him on the stand anyway to testify about the 2004 murder of 14-year-old Da-Keem Galloway.
“This isn’t an episode of ‘Let’s Make a Deal,’ this is the murder of a child,” District Attorney Daniel Conley said about Grady last year.
Galloway’s killer, Charon Ray, 22, was convicted without Grady’s input and will serve out his life behind bars. But a miffed Grady, when forced to take the stand, denied knowledge of the fatal fight between Ray and Galloway.
Judge Judith Fabricant yesterday gave him eight years for perjury.
Conley said yesterday Grady’s fate is a warning to all “who would lie under oath, whether it’s in the grand jury or at trial. We will charge you, indict you and ask the court for state prison time.”
