  • Thwaites' unfair ploy

    The Editor, Sir:

I am an early riser and do enjoy listening to enlightened talk-show dialogue in the mornings. I must admit, however, that I do find it increasingly difficult to escape what seems to be a heavy anti-government bias across the spectrum of talk shows at this time.

From the view point of his articulation and his intelligence there is one show in particular that I find well-planned and well-moderated, that is Ronnie Thwaites' 'Independent Talk'. I do, however, find it difficult not to draw the conclusion that, increasingly, he uses his programme as a political platform from which to throw barbs at the Government. Thwaites seems to edit every news headline in the morning papers through his pink-coloured People's National Party glasses.

    Opportunity for rebuttal

Now, there is nothing wrong with a talk-show host having a particular political opinion and saying so. However, for a sitting opposition MP in the House of Parliament to be using the airwaves to push his agenda without the other side having an opportunity for rebuttal must, in the very least, represent a conflict of interest. Good broadcasting form must preclude this.

    I am, etc.,

And how does Thwaites' apparent bias compare to that of others?
