  • ‘Ananda Alert’ programme launched

    Posted: 2009-05-19 13:15:00

The much-anticipated ‘Ananda Alert’ programme to respond to reports of missing children was launched this morning at Jamaica House.

Under the programme, whenever a child goes missing and a report is made to the police, all the relevant security and child care agencies will be immediately mobilised to begin a search.

After 12 hours the child’s photograph will be placed in the media, at shops, on taxi cabs and billboards among other places.

The ‘Ananda Alert’ programme is named after 11 year old Ananda Dean, who was abducted and murdered in September 2008.

It’s a system that has been welcomed by Betty-Anne Blaine, the convener of the lobby group, Hear the Children’s Cry.

The group had proposed the establishment of the ‘Ananda Alert’ programme last year following several other violent incidents involving children.

According to Mrs. Blaine, in 2008 more than 900 children went missing, with only a third of them returning home.

Its on this basis that she’s asking Jamaicans to support the alert programme.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
