  • Air J maybe coming to an end.

Air J offers Wednesday, 13 May 2009 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } There is indication that the Government is close to selecting a buyer for the cash strapped national airline Air Jamaica.

st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }Senator Don Wehby, Minister in the Finance Ministry responsible for the sale of Air Jamaica, has confirmed that two formal offers have been received from investors.

Earlier this year, it was reported that three investors were interested in acquiring a controlling interest in the airline.

Senator Wehby who gave an update on the sale on Tuesday, did not identify the bidders.

However, RJR News has received reports that one of the bidders is a consortium of major players in the tourism and airline industries with connections in Jamaica.

Mr. Wehby said the two offers are being reviewed and evaluated before being taken to Cabinet

Air Jamaica, which racked up more than US$100 million in losses last year, is one of several state-owned entities, which the Government is attempting to divest this fiscal year.

The administrationhad projected to privatise the airline by the end of March but failed to meet the deadline.

It is now targeting to complete the sale by July.

If it happens...will it still be, as entity, Air Jamaica?

Somebody should insist on a NO BAILOUT clause for this sale. If it fails it fails, end of story.
