PNP: Gov't partisan in selecting major Labour Day projects

THE Opposition People's National Party (PNP) yesterday asked Minister Olivia Grange to clarify the selection process used to determine the three major National Labour Day projects.
The party, in a statement last evening, also asked Grange, the minister of youth, sports and culture, to say how many projects were reviewed by the National Labour Day Committee, as well as name the members of the group.
"It is interesting that the projects that have been announced are in three constituencies that are currently the subject of a constitutional matter now before the courts for which by-elections may be called," the PNP's statement said.
The selection of projects in the constituencies of Gregory Mair, Shahine Robinson and Michael Stern, said the PNP, could only be with a view of improving the JLP's prospects in any upcoming by-elections and was vulgarly partisan.
".This action is a continuation of a pattern started last year when West Portland was the venue for a major Labour Day project," said the PNP.
"Such political tactics only serve to undermine the movement toward a more inclusive, tolerant and transparent political culture based on the building of partnerships rather than highlighting partisan divisions," said party chairman Robert Pickersgill.
"The Opposition bemoans the use of Labour Day, which was initiated by former Prime Minister Michael Manley to forge national consensus around honest work, volunteerism and national participation, as a cynical electioneering tool and a divisive event on our national calendar," said the PNP.

Grange clarifies issues with Labour Day projects

The Culture Minister Olivia Grange has sought to clarify the issues surrounding the selection of three of the four national Labour Day projects for this year.

The Opposition PNP had accused the government of acting in a partisan manner in selecting the three projects in constituencies led by JLP members of parliament.

In a statement to the media last night, Ms Grange who has responsibility for Labour Day said each MP was given an opportunity to nominate a project.

The three projects at the centre of the PNP’s contention are a ginger project at Top Alston, in the North West Clarendon constituency of Michael Stern and a multi-purpose court at Riversdale, in Northeast St. Catherine led by Gregory Mair.

The PNP is also questioning the selection of a spruce up project for the St Ann's Bay Hospital in the Shahine Robinson led Northeast St. Ann constituency.

The Opposition has also pointed out that the three constituencies are currently the subject of a constitutional matter now before the courts for which by elections may be called.

Ms Grange says a letter dated April 15 was sent to each member of parliament asking him or her to nominate National Labour Day projects.

She says only the three JLP MP’s responded to her letter on May 1.

The proposals were accepted and a cap of $500,000 set for each project.

In addition, Ms Grange says the Opposition spokesman on Labour and Social Security, Derrick Kellier, contacted her on May 5 with a proposal for a Labour Day project in his South St. James constituency which was accepted.

Ms Grange has also rejected claims that millions of tax payers’ money will be spent on each project by the Labour Day Secretariat.

According to her, the budget for Workers‘ Week (which includes National Labour Day) is $11 million, a little less than last year.

Each parish council, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), and the Portmore Municipality has been allocated $100,000.

Thats it. But when Wrong Jungle know that fanatics like Mosiah exist he will easily forget that all Mps were asked for ideas. In an earlier post Mosiah in a sarcastic manner said something about spreading wealth. Well him need fi save him outrage until next year .. because according to reports, the plan is to have one project in each parish.

I simply did not know it was my responsibility to post a rebuttal to the claim and project the spin of the other side.
Somehow I thought the question sign in my title would convey a lack of complete knowledge of the issue.. or at least indicate that I had no firm position either way.... silly me.
