AUSTIN, Texas -An angry crowd threw rocks and bottles at police in riot gear in Austin, Texas, hours after an officer shot two men, killing one of them.

Police say eight officers had minor injuries and eight patrol cars were damaged as authorities tried to break up the crowd of about 100 people that gathered after the Monday morning shooting.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said the shooting occurred after police investigating complaints of shots fired over the weekend approached a car with three men inside. He said an officer shot one man who made a movement toward a weapon when the officer tried to wake him up, and shot another who ran toward him.

Acevedo said the unidentified officer who fired will be placed on standard administrative leave. =====================================

KATY, Texas -Police say a 12-year-old suburban Houston girl fatally shot her father in the back of the head, possibly while he was sleeping.
Katy Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler says a relative of 38-year-old Mark A. Nelson called 911 and summoned officers to the home Wednesday morning.

Officers found Nelson lying on his side in the master bedroom, shot once in the back of the head. Tyler told the Houston Chronicle that Nelson worked nights and may have been trying to sleep. He says Nelson was alone with his daughter when he was shot.

Nelson died Wednesday night at a hospital. His daughter was charged with aggravated assault before he died.

Neighbor Gabrielle Young told the newspaper there had been tension between the girl and her father.

DAYTON, Texas -Authorities say a Texas landowner and his wife shot and critically wounded a man and two young children on an off-road jaunt in a sport utility vehicle because they believed the group was trespassing on their property.

Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor says Gale Muhs and his wife, Sheila, of Dayton, were jailed on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He says both fired shots from the same gun.

A 7-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man were critically wounded and airlifted to a Houston hospital. The children's 40-year-old father suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say the SUV was climbing a lakeside levee Thursday evening when the shots were fired.
