Brown Stew Chicken from Irie Palace

There are spicier items on the brief but true menu at Irie Palace Authentic Jamaican Restaurant, but brown stew chicken packs just enough spiciness to make you notice - eventually. It wasn't until I'd had a couple of bites that I was aware of a light heat building on the tongue.

For brown stew chicken, savory chicken is left on the bone and chopped into pieces before it's seasoned, sautéed and then stewed. It's served with a mound of rice and red beans (or plain rice, if you prefer), a mix of carrots, peppers and shredded cabbage, and slices of fried plantain - quite a hearty meal.

Irie Palace has table service if you'd rather dine in, and the menu offers other island dishes to choose from, including jerk chicken, stew peas, escovitch fish, curry goat and ackee and saltfish, known as the national dish of Jamaica. When you're in a rush, one of the stewed dishes travels well and reheats well, too.
    What: Brown stew chicken
Where: Irie Palace Authentic Jamaican Restaurant, 7506 W. Appleton Ave.
How much: $9.99 dinner portion, $7.99 lunch
    Serves: One hearty appetite
Why we like it: The chicken is loaded with flavor - and a touch of heat.
Suggested side: It already comes with rice and beans, veggies and fried plantain, so get a Ting ($1.50), a grapefruit soda from Jamaica.
    Hours: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday; noon-10 p.m. Sunday-Monday
To order: Call ahead, (414) 461-8203. Allow at least 10 minutes for stew dishes such as brown stew chicken, 25 minutes or more for fish dishes such as escovitch fish, which are made to order.

At Irie Palace, there is a very colorful mural on the wall depicting life in the center of a Jamaican town. There are street vendors, push carts, a bus with people trying to climb in through the windows.

The first time I ate there, about a year and a half ago, I floored the co-owner with my knowledge of things Jamaican. I mentioned the mural, which had a woman in a red dress, talking on a cell phone and smiling.

"See that woman in the red dress, talking on the cell phone?" I said. "She must be with Digicel."

The owner looked absoultely shocked. "How would you know?' she said.

"Because she's smiling," I replied. "If she was with Cable and Wireless, she would be angry."
