  • Opposition raises IMF concerns

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is this afternoon raising concerns about the governments pronouncement that it could return to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

Last month Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the government did not foresee returning to IMF because the country is not now experiencing a balance of payment problem.

In his contribution to the budget debate yesterday, Mr. Golding hinted that such a move is likely if Jamaica’s cash reserves continue to dwindle.

Opposition spokesman on Industry and Commerce Senator Mark Golding says while he understands why returning to the IMF might be necessary, he wants the government to consider other alternatives.

Senator Golding says if the government does seek financial assistance from the IMF, it should ensure that it gets the best possible deal.

The government has already held talks with IMF officials.

Last week, Minister without portfolio in the finance ministry Senator Don Wehby and Bank of Jamaica Governor Derrick Lattibeaudiere went to Washington for what Mr. Golding said were initial talks to review the country’s economic situation.
