  • Nurses to continue protests

    Wednesday, 29 April 2009

Despite receiving a response from Prime Minister Bruce Golding the island's registered nurses
say they will continue to protest until a date is set for the start of their long awaited reclassification exercise.

The Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) which had sought the intervention of the Prime Minister received a reply Tuesday afternoon.

But President of the NAJ, Edith Allwood-Anderson, said there was no indication when the reclassification will begin.

Ms. Allwood-Anderson said the protests will continue but promised that the health care systemwill not be disrupted.

"They will continue to make their point utilizing their off duty, their morning off, their day break and nurses will only do 40 hours per week because they are shift workers and if they are called for emergencies they will be available because no nurse is aiming at disrupting care," said Mrs. Allwood Anderson.

The nurses have been upset since Finance Minister Audley Shaw reportedly dismissed an agreement reached between the NAJ and Senator Dwight Nelson, who is in charge of public sector wage negotiations.

On Tuesday nurses attached to public hospitals protested in several parishes.
