There was a joint group from the Senate being question on the war in Iraq.
The first act was much huffing and puffing by the Joint Chiefs about the great job the armed forces were doing. Gains made etc, etc. The were winning the war. The Iraqi troops and para-military forces loyal to the US installed leader was on the way to taking over from the US forces and all-in-all were great. Iraq was fast forwarding on the way to O-ky-dory!Chest swell-up! Chest thumping!
Act two had the Republicans and Leiberman giving leading question and shooting down the idea of time-lines for the Iraqi government forces to accomplish certain tasks that would allow US forces to be redeployed and or with-drawn. greater beating of chests! Thumping of chests and desks!
Act three had Democratic Senators pressing for answers on levels of violence from period immediately after "Mission Accomplished" through to the present. Had there been increasing losses by US troops, the asked?
The Joint Chief 'hemed' and 'hawed'. So did his Administration sidekick. These are the same blokes who just minutes before had said, everything was on course....everything was fine...we are winning...Iraq was on the way to 'land of good and plenty'.
Was there civil war - Sunni vs Shia, Asymmetric warfare between insurgents and coalition forces, sectarian war...increasing deaths of Iraqis and Americans, ...a current civil war...chaos?
The Joint Chief and his sidekick administrator stuttered and spluttered - so the Senators pulled out Pentagon docs that said, YES! Then all of a sudden the Joint Chief fell dumb and his side-kick said, with the same commanding voice he had used early saying 'everything was great'...and, in the same pompous manner, declared YES there was civil war...and the country was going to hell...and there was not one...not one single solitary Iraqi battalion that was sufficiently equipped to operate on its own after 4 years of training by the US!
One Senator said, hey we take kids out of high school, train them for 6 or so months and they are ready to operate independently...damn we send them off to war to operate independently...What the hell have you guys been doing?
Senator Hillary Clinton opined the plan your plan is to "HOPE"?! "HOPE is not a plan". Gentlemen you have no timeline for any of your hopes to realised? When will the Iraqi people stop waring with each other and Iraq becomes this cradle of democracy? The Joint Chiefs and the US administrator looked at her as if she was mad. "Peace! Stop fighting! End the civil war! It shall happen their faces and expressions 'thundered!' Did she not her we have the great plan HOPE in place?! What is a few thousandmore dead and horrible disfiguredAmericans and a few hundred of thousands more dead and horrible disfigured Iraqis?HOPE AMERICA!
The Joint Chiefs and the US Administrator left belting out a timorous warble of"America the Beautiful". The damn curtain would not for the life of it come down...the lights however was on full force. There was no applause, just grim faces save and except from some Republicans and the Joint Chief and the pompous ass of a US Administrator.
