Jamaica to step up lobby against UK travel tax Tuesday, 21 April 2009 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } Jamaica and other countries will on Tuesday step up their lobby against a proposal by the British Government to increase the Air Passenger Duty (APD) by November this year.
As part of its effort to reduce emissions
from aviation, the UK is considering increasing the duty based on the distance travelled by passengers to and from UK airports.
The aim is to ensure that those who travel far meet the cost of the environmental impact.
Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett says a presentation
will be made in the House of Lords on Tuesday calling for the proposal to be scrapped.
"The Caribbean is particularly stressed by it because it will add £50 per ticket to a £180 per ticket in the first instance and this will significantly affect the price of the Caribbean destination. This is a concern and we are making a presentation on behalf of the Caribbean in this regard," said Mr. Bartlett.
