Luther is certainly a candidate for the best R&B singer ever. Not my personal choice but it seems as if forumites guilty of the same thing as the people who compile that Top 20 Jamaican songs list...not giving respect to recent greats.

when people talk about paul robeson, the fact that he is old is largely irrelevant when one considers the body of work!

Heard all the recent greats, from Paul Roberson to Marvin Gaye to Mario Lanza, you name it. And the winner is - LUTHER!

But isn't Luther a credible candidate, up there with the best of them? I think so.

Can't see how Eddie Kendricks belong in Luther's class for example.

Ruffin yes, Marvin yes, but not Eddie. And I am saying this as a DIEHARD Temptations fan (BEST R&B group ever).

Willi intoduced Bob's name so perhaps he can address that. I pointed out that Bob is not a mere singer like Luther..

Nat King Cole is at the top of the pile.... whether recent or not.

Nat King Cole certainly had that unique "velvet" voice... I'd give the nod to him as well, whicle acknowledging the subjective nature of rating a "best ever".
