IDB commits $96m to inner-city improvements this year

THE Government is to implement an Urban Renewal Project this year, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, which is aimed at improving the quality of life in inner-city communities in Kingston.
The project, which falls under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce has been given $96 million in the 2009/10 Estimates of Expenditure to:
. strengthen community- based organisations;
. upgrade housing and environmental conditions; and
. foster employment opportunities and business activities in these areas.
Targets for 2009/10 include:
. community sensitisation and organisation;
. upgrade of shelter and improvement of the environment;
. support for the development of economic activities; and
. institutional capacity building for community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations.
It is scheduled to be conducted April 2009 to March 2010 and is to be implemented by the ministry.
