    THE Government is to implement an Urban Renewal Project this year, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, which is aimed at improving the quality of life in inner-city communities in Kingston.

    The project, which falls under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce has been given $96 million in the 2009/10 Estimates of Expenditure to:

    . strengthen community- based organisations;

    . upgrade housing and environmental conditions; and

    . foster employment opportunities and business activities in these areas.
    Targets for 2009/10 include:

    . community sensitisation and organisation;

    . upgrade of shelter and improvement of the environment;

    . support for the development of economic activities; and

    . institutional capacity building for community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations.
    It is scheduled to be conducted April 2009 to March 2010 and is to be implemented by the ministry.

    Good move!

    A pity the present govt. needed to tear down projects started by the previous govt. only to come right back to something very similar.

    You may call the inner-city housing project anything you wish, but what is certain is the goals of the project are sound and must be achieved.
