Fake cop was quite courteous - taxi driver
    Published: Wednesday | March 25, 2009

    Western Bureau:

Jailed fake cop, 23-year-old Courtney Grayson, may have created a favourable impression with at least one member of the public with whom he interfaced before he was exposed and arrested for his fraudulent conduct in St James.

"I found him to be quite courteous and well-mannered," said a Mount Salem taxi operator who had his documents checked by Grayson during a recent police spot check.

"Unlike some of his colleagues, he displayed excellent interpersonal skills and was not as impatient as some."

    Unassuming young man

In the volatile Hendon, Norwood, area in Montego Bay, where Grayson lived with his girlfriend, he had also earned the respect of some members of the community who said he was a quiet, unassuming young man who was always smartly dressed.

"Bwoy, me cyaah believe him is not a real policeman," a young man from the area told The Gleaner yesterday. "Him always look real neat and businesslike in his blue denim uniform, his bulletproof vest and his keep-and-care (gun)."

According to the young man, the affable Grayson also enjoyed a lot of respect from the young men in the community who would tone down whatever illicit activities they were involved in whenever he was around.

"He got a lot of respect around here as a policeman who live in the ghetto," the young man continued. "That officer never violate no youth around here, so we also give him due respect whenever we see him around."

While members of the public are seemingly at ease talking about Grayson, including the many times he was seen on legitimate police operations with an M-16 slung over his shoulder, his 'colleagues', including some with whom he worked, have been reluctant to speak about him.

    Major indictment on force

However, a former senior cop, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described Grayson's act of deception as a major indictment on the force since so many areas of checks and balances were violated.

"What happened is a universal blunder from top to bottom," the former cop said. "The system has checks and balances at almost every turn, so I still can't believe that such a thing could have happened and continued for six months … that is absolutely disgraceful and heads should roll."

    'Couldn't fool me'

The former policeman argued that Grayson could not have "come to my police station and fool me".

"All policemen moving into a new division must be accompanied by his file, which carries all information about him, including pertinent information about his areas of speciality, such as whether or not he is a force driver or whether or not he is a detective and other such information," he said.

While not downplaying the harm Grayson has done to the image of the police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Denver Frater said he was happy the system finally got it right and exposed the fraud.

"We are happy he is off the street," said Frater. "Investigations will be done to find out exactly what happened and I am sure measures will be instituted to prevent something like this from happening again."

      WESTERN BUREAU:

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn says she elected to discontinue criminal proceedings against fake cop Courtney Grayson - who was charged with impersonating a police officer and illegal possession of property - in the interest of justice.

The DPP entered a plea of unconditional nolle prosequi when Grayson appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. According to the DPP, she has been in dialogue with the police on all aspects of the matter and, in light of certain information, she took the decision.

In the case of a nolle prosequi, the Crown is empowered to discontinue a case that may later be brought back to court.

      interest of justice

The news has come as a shock to the Montego Bay community, particularly the legal fraternity. Grayson's lawyer, George Clue, was tight-lipped.

"When he turned up at court he was told that at this stage the matter was withdrawn in the interest of justice, and that is all I can say for now," was the response of the attorney, who came all the way from May Pen, Clarendon, to represent the 24-year-old defendant.

In the meantime, the police anti-corruption unit, headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Justin Felice, is still carrying out investigations into the case.

"Investigations are continuing in relation to his interaction with other officers," Felice told The Gleaner.

Grayson made the spotlight weeks ago when this newspaper learnt that he reportedly carried an M16, wore a police badge, ID and denim uniform, while patrolling the streets of Montego Bay for six months, before members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force realised he was not one of their own.

For 182 days, the fake cop who resided in Hendon/Norwood in St James, worked as a policeman at the Mt Salem Police Station in Montego Bay, before he was arrested.

It appears so! Heard that RJR interviewed the DPP this morning, lets hope they put some information on their website.

5 cops interdicted for man arrested for impersonating officer

There is a major development in the case involving a man who, for six months, impersonated a policeman at the Mount Salem Police Station in St. James.

RJR News has been informed that five members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), who are assigned to the station, have been interdicted.

The cops were interdicted on Wednesday following investigations into the case involving the alleged impersonator, who has been identified as Courtney Greyson.

Among those interdicted are three Constables and two District Constables.

Senior investigators including Head of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Assistant Commissioner Justin Felice, are tight lipped on the case.

The five interdicted cops were reportedly in regular contact with Mr. Greyson during the period that he pretended to be a member of the JCF.

They were said to have accompanied him on patrols as well as special operations.

Allegations are that during his six month stint at the Mount Salem Police Station, Mr. Greyson was assigned an M-16 rifle.

The scam was uncovered by a civilian who knew Mr. Greyson.

The man reportedly spotted Mr. Greyson at a fast food chain in Montego Bay and made a report to the police.

On investigation, it was then discovered that Mr. Greyson was not a JCF member.

A search was carried out at his house and police uniforms and other police paraphernalia were allegedly found on the premises.

Mr. Greyson who is said to be from Hendon/Norwood was later arrested and charged.

Charges against police impersonator dropped for now - DPP

On Wednesday, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Paula Llewellyn, discontinued the charges against Mr. Greyson.

But Ms. Llewellyn says although criminal proceedings have been discontinued it does not mean that the case has been withdrawn.

According to her, due to the sensitive nature of the case, she was unable to give details on the matter as it could compromise the investigation.

Ms Llewellyn added that her Department is still in dialogue with the police on the case.

The DPP entered a nolle prosequi when Mr. Grayson appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

A nolle prosequi means the Crown is empowered to discontinue a case that may later be brought back to court.

What??!!!!! NNN is now reported that its 18 policemen have been interdicted. According to the commish, the fake cop was recruited by these officers. So, it isn't an undercover investigation, it appears these were policemen involved in the lotto scam.

I have always maintained and said it on this forum that I am not surprised by Mobay police. I have always maintained that they are very crooked based on the little time I spent there.

I believe the JLP association with an organization called the CIA was the principal reason for the state of emergency.
