  • Lest we Forget....

.... or rather... since we have forgotten or ... didn't know in the first place.

Everyone is free to express opinions regarding Jamaica's condition and suggest ways that it can be improved. This holds wherever one is located or whatever one's station in life may be.

The notion that Jamaicans residing outside of the country should be inhibited from proposing solutions to problems or whose opinions are somehow of lesser importance to others is ridiculous.

This notion displays a lack of understanding of history and Jamaica's reality of transnationalism. Jamaica is borderless. Jamaica represents an idea.. a culture.. a way of life.
When Jamaica cries, those residing in Jamaica feel it the hardest... but Jamaicans everywhere cry as well.

    Two simple examples:

We forget that Jamaicans residing in New York City in the 1930's sparked the self government movement which led later to independence for Jamaica.
New York based Jamaicans through their organization the Jamaica Progressive League mainly provided the inspiration, energy and early material support for that movement.

Those unsung heroes were themselves inspired by the greatest Jamaican, Marcus Garvey, whose views were suffocated by Jamaica's ruling elites but found traction among, firstly Jamaicans, then many others in that same New York City.
Traction to point where Garvey's influence went global.. inspiring the freedom movement in Africa and Africans everywhere.

Often people outside a particular situation are able to be objective, clear headed and therefore able to think through problems.. better than those consumed with fighting the raging fires.
We all have this experience with our friends no doubt.

That's what friends (and fellow Jamaicans) are for.

Historian, you would do well to ponder that.

How touching, although this post is completely unnecessary and certainly aimed at the wrong person! Now, for your information:

    1. I have not visited Jamaica in well over a decade (more like two decades), and so I could in no way be condemning Jamaicans who live outside the country as being unfit to comment and propose solutions! If I did, then I would be condemning myself!

As for me and visiting Jamaica (where I have only a handful of known relatives residing), simply put I would literally get lost in today’s vastly expanded, modernized Jamaica!

    2. I was not born when the Jamaica Constitution was finalized in 1962, so I could not have been a part of the formulation of that document which (quite ridiculously) gives Jamaicans with Commonwealth citizenship the legal right to sit in Parliament while Jamaicans holding North American, European (non-British), etc. citizenship have to give up such citizenship (as poor Daryl Vaz was forced to do)! In fact, looking at this ridiculous clause, why the hell do we then allow Jamaicans to hold dual citizenship!

In fact, I have called elsewhere for amendments to be made to our 1962 Constituion, in particular the clause that Dabdoub so enthusiastically seized upon!

Yes, it is damn ridiculous, as Abe Daboub and others in your revered PNP seem to fail to comprehend!

Don1, you have chosen to call me out in a new thread. You no doubt realize by now that words, sentences and paragraphs are my favorite modus operandi (in fact, this is how I make my living), so if you want a war of words, then let the ****************ing war begin!

Do you want to begin with a discussion of Jamaican history and your so-called “reality of transnationalism” (whatever that is)?! Or do you want to start with the man who you’ve just crowned the “Greatest Jamaican”?

I'm happy you were touched by my post.. does make me feel good to be appreciloved.
My post was essentially a response to your views in the marijuana legalization etc thread where you made an apparently negative reference to Jamaicans who deign to opine on Jamaica and propose solutions while living in comfy situations abroad.
I find that criticism ludicrous... although commonplace... and demonstrated why.

        1. I have not visited Jamaica in well over a decade (more like two decades), and so I could in no way be condemning Jamaicans who live outside the country as being unfit to comment and propose solutions! If I did, then I would be condemning myself!

Not surprised to hear of your long divorce from Jamaica... it explains much of your ignorance of things Jamaican.
I'll take this ignorance on your part into consideration in evaluating your contributions.

As for me and visiting Jamaica (where I have only a handful of known relatives residing), simply put I would literally get lost in today’s vastly expanded, modernized Jamaica!

        Fret not...Maps are available.

My post had only tangential relevance to dual citizenship or the Constitution. I fail to see the relevance of the above to my stated views.

The question of dual citizenship and representation in Parliament never troubled me in the least.. so I never commented negatively or positively on the matter... it's a tempest in a teacup.. and distracting people from real issues in my view.

I have not stated any opinion on Vaz other than to question his moral character and fitness to represent people in Parliament because of misdeeds he perpetrated in his past and his lack of accountability for them. Which misdeeds subsequently led to great and unresolved tragedy.
In view of your twenty year disassociation with Jamaica, perhaps you might consider researching Vaz's history before you anoint him as some kind of martyr in this overblown political matter.

In fact, I have called elsewhere for amendments to be made to our 1962 Constituion, in particular the clause that Dabdoub so enthusiastically seized upon!

Again...an irrelevance. I am not concerned with what Dabdoub does or doesn't do... but glad to hear of your interest in the Constitution.

Yes, it is damn ridiculous, as Abe Daboub and others in your revered PNP seem to fail to comprehend!

I have PNP and JLP friends. To which "revered PNP friends" do you refer here?

Don1, you have chosen to call me out in a new thread. You no doubt realize by now that words, sentences and paragraphs are my favorite modus operandi (in fact, this is how I make my living), so if you want a war of words, then let the ****************ing war begin!

Again, I mentioned you in the thread beacuse I perceived criticism in your post regarding Jamaicans living abroad, which I considered ludicrous in view of the monumental contributions of Jamaica's diaspora.
That post of yours was also riddled with snide references to "Jamaicans being fearless"... a view I had recently espoused.

Since I had just yesterday made a detailed post proposing a possible solution to Jamaica's problems... your views struck a negative chord.

I seek no war with you.. but I don't fear a fair exchage of views.
If your boast of words being your "favorite (sic) modus operandi" was meant to impress.. you need to try harder.

Do you want to begin with a discussion of Jamaican history and your so-called “reality of transnationalism” (whatever that is)?! Or do you want to start with the man who you’ve just crowned the “Greatest Jamaican”?
I'm always ready to defend my views, especially with a reasonable opponent... the ball is in your court.

I may well be out of my division.

Maudib, the Rear Admiral operates in a division that I definitely want nothing to do with.
