    Passport and citizenship

The media tell about Prime Minister Bruce Golding receiving his Caricom passport. The report informs that "regional heads of government agreed on a document as a defining symbol of regionalism". Now, my comments are not just for the government, but for all in the political, educational, trade union and religious leadership in this country. My thinking of a passport is that of a document that is the defining symbol of my citizenship. While I understand the idea of regionalism, it was never an ideal of those who have fought for my freedom and independence. I am quite aware of what is known as the "Jamaican spirit", a national consciousness that cannot be expressed by way of regional convenience; and since I was not a part of the decision making for such redefinition of citizenship, I beg to differ. There are too many things in this country that have passed by without critique. This is so, because we are acting against our history. We are behaving as if this country is filled with kowtowers.
