  • Police release captain and crew of drug laden vessel

Police release captain and crew of drug laden vessel Monday, 16 February 2009 A German Captain and members of his crew who were being investigated by the local police for drug trafficking have been released.

The Captain and his 20-member crew were released after the police were unable to link them to the 80 pounds of cocaine seized onboard a foreign vessel at the Kingston Wharves last month.

The cocaine which had a street value of $62 million was seized on January 27 when the narcotics police raided the vessel, the MV Rothorn, which arrived from Guyana.

A senior investigator told RJR News that the cops were unable to gather sufficient evidence to link any of the crew members to the cocaine.

According to him, the cocaine was found in several sections of the vessel and this made it difficult for investigators to identify the owner of the drugs.

The vessel which came to Jamaica to collect containers was destined for Panama.
