In the storied history of Olympic athletes, people from all walks of life have stepped forward to the world's biggest stage and represented their countries with varying degrees of pride. Obviously, not every athlete treats their lofty position with the respect it is certainly due - and not every champion is going to act like one.
So yes - Michael Phelps, America's Golden Boy in a very literal sense, has been photographed taking a mighty hit from a colossal glass bong. Now, Phelps is an idiot for doing so at a college party in the age of cell-phone cameras, but the question persists: is this a big deal, or not? Well, I wonder what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has to say about that.
"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," said Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors." Good for you, Jacques, way to give it to - huh? What's that, you say? This quote was about Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt, and this was in regards to him pounding his chest while crossing the finish line?
My apologies, must be the wrong quote. Still, if this is how the IOC feels about someone getting too excited about winning an Olympic Gold Medal, I can only imagine how they might react to illegal marijuana use. After all, wasn't it Rogge who called Phelps "the icon of the games" just last summer?
Man, he must be embarrassed.
Okay, here's the quote: "I think it's an ethical point, a point of principal, and we have a duty to fight against it. Many people can say, 'Well, marijuana is a very light drug.' I am not an expert, but many people say marijuana is a beginning to hard drugs."
"That's not the way we perceive being a champion,"
Unsurprising then, that they took his medal… what? Really? Sorry, this quote is from former IOC director Juan Antonio Samaranch regarding the 1998 winter games, when a snowboarder tested positive for marijuana, and they took his gold medal away.
Now, this decision was later rescinded, as it was determined that the IOC was out of line - still, it gives us a pretty clear feeling on how the IOC feels regarding recreational drug use.
Okay, I think this is the right quote, guys. Go ahead and print it. "Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion. He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."
…WHAT?
No, seriously, that's what they said? His commitment to continue to act as a role model? So let me get this straight: if a black dude celebrates crossing the finish line, that's disgraceful. If a Canadian from a traditionally "counter-culture" sport is tested positive for some secondhand smoke, you can strip his medal.
But when your All-American poster child turns out to smoke some cannabis himself, you congratulate him on being a role model?
Something stinks here - and it's not just stale bong water.

It is what it is ! To di Worl.THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!
"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.
"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
