  • What's your favourite reggae love song?

    Friday, February 13, 2009

It's that time of the year when love comes a-calling . whether it's old love or new love. And it's also Reggae Month, so Splash paired the two and asked a few music industry players to get all romantic and tell us their favourite reggae love song.

Gee, how do I choose? There are just so many good songs over the years...Well, let's say All I Have Is Love by Gregory Isaacs for Reggae and Oh Girl by the Chi-Lites for R&B.

Ever since I was a boy, Johnny Clarke's Rock With Me Baby has always had that special sound and feel. When you are at a session and that song plays in the wee hours of the morning, trust me, it's a different thing completely. Also Queen Ifrica's Below the Waist is a great love song. it shows creative use of words to effectively get across her message about a particular subject, thus making it worthy for airplay.

It would have to be a Dennis Brown or a Beres. If I can chose only one it would have to be For You by Dennis Brown.

My favourite reggae love song is Waiting In Vain. Marley allows himself to be so vulnerable on this one. He's unsure. His fate is in the hands of his beloved, has been that way for the three years in which he's been knocking at her door. Imagine - the Tuff Gong himself singing about love at first sight! The bass groove on it is sweet, the bridge sophisticated, the guitar solo jazzy and intricate, the emotion so raw.

First I have to declare that I really love the music of the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown. Therefore, it goes without saying that a D Brown tune should be at the top of my list. His track, Should I, has to be my favourite reggae love song because it speaks some serious words of love... how could I ever go on living this way, acting like a child so young and gay, you don't know what it means to be loved, oh no.

It has to be a Beres Hammond track. The voice, the music, the lyrics, the Man. The truth is give me any and every Beres Hammond song and I'm ok, but if I had to narrow it down I will take, No Disturb Sign, just listen to the lyrics and you will see why.

Boris Gardner's I Wanna Wake Up With You. When I was little, I was separated briefly from my mother and when we were reunited that is one song I can recall being played constantly on the radio . perhaps it had just been released. I was probably about four at the time, and I can remember it as if it were yesterday.

                    Favourite Reggae Love Song

There are so many that it’s hard to select one at the moment. However, “She’s Royal,” by Tarrus Riley definitely comes to mind immediately.

Definately too hard to pick one, or even ten, but I will go with these five since they came to mind first (no particular order)

                        - "Always Around" - Bunny Rugs at his finest
                        - "Got to get Away" - Beres Hammond (Thanks again me bredren Baddaz for the hard-to-find Soul Reggae album)
                        - "Dreamland" by Bunny Wailer originally on the BlackHeart Man album, later covered by Third World. This is probably the best song Bunny has written
                        - Two Dennis tunes : "Love Has found its Way" and the less-known "For You"

should that have been "ram goat lover"?
