  • How to save the Sugar Industry...

..... and make steps to energy security.

The Government has the power to save this industry relatively easily with bold, decisive and creative policy.... unfortunately something Jamaica is not known for.

Answer: Adopt (and adapt) Brazilian auto transportation policy... especially since the groundwork is already laid.

    1. Mandate a ten year time period where say 75% of automobiles must be flex fuel to run on petroleum and pure or 85% ethanol.... either retrofitted or manufacturer supplied..provide 100% tax rebate on retrofitted flex fuel engines.

    2. Heavily tax or ban importation of petroleum fuelled vehicles and provide zero or low import tax rating on flex fuel vehicles... Brazil is the best source of such vehicles

This will create a massive opportunity for not just saving but expanding the sugar industry via ethanol production AND save FX with the import substitution of petroleum.

Time for the get off its a$$ and find some creative solutions.

There is a lot missing here.

As a man who help run down Gray's Inn profit I can tell you they need to stop people from stealing the cane. too many people can go and cut eat and sell cane from the fields.

Too many people burn fire near the field and burn down the cane field.

use modern techniques to read the cane, burning sugar and cutting it has proven not the best source.

The only way sugar can be saved is in private hands because the government of Jamaica knows nothing about productivity in sugar farming and they bow to the cane cutters all the way.

The machinery we are using to reap and make the cane is 1950 stuff.

Sell all the cane farms to appleton and Jamaica broilers and other people who are profitable farming or making by products. I would say give it to them for free if they are Jamaican investors, only no bail out.

You start sound like a free market capitalist now, LOL.

The reality is that Jamaican political parties have unions in thier DNA, so they will always shy away from the difficult decisions regarding labour and labour unions.

Do these companies have any real book (balance sheet) value? The machinery not worth anything but there is a lot of land still under sugar cultivation.

Depends on how you look on it. It values a lot to Jamaicans and not to mention the parts people who them have to go to. In the world of production it is scrap metal.

I have defended markets, and production but I don't know about all the free part, cause I believe sometimes government have to give a heavy hand unlike the former Bush admin who let the capitalist them run wild.

          You totally miss the point.

My piece shows how the local market for sugar cane can be massively expanded AND our importation of foreign oil reduced via intelligent and creative policy.

It did not seek to address sugar cane burning and old machinery specifically.
Once a viable and sustainable market for sugar cane is established.. it becomes more valuable and will attract investment addressing the aging plant and the physical security of the asset.... that's basic economics.

Well all of that is good but productivity is also a major part of basic economics and until we can be competitive with other countries in the amount of sugar produced per acreage then we are in deep trouble, even if there is the market we will just be importing it.

"Mr. Speaker, we have been having dialogue with the key players in the petroleum sector since October last year and our team, including logistics experts from Brazil, has been working diligently to ensure the smooth and effective transition and operation of this giant step towards breaking the dependency. One constraint, however, is appropriate storage facility in the western region of the island but the nature of the challenge is such that we must respond now. We have committed $300M to this project and equipment has already been ordered and the construction of the storage facility will commence shortly. We expect the facility to be completed by year end and we will be mandating the islandwide use of E-10 effective April next year." (Energy Minister's CONTRIBUTION TO SECTORAL DEBATE 2008/2009 ).

                Is the facility completed?

                  Again you don't get it.

Assured local market = Investor confidence = Investment capital attracted = modernized plant = greater yields & efficiency

the problem is investors are not looking to put their money in Sugar when unions strike every week. Cane farm set alite every week, the basic practises we have are nothing to go by. A English firm bought some sugar factories years ago and gave it back to the government for $1.00 because of its ineffiency. If we can solve our problems then it will attract buyers and attract capital, we keep on looking the other way around thinking we have prized assets. Same thing with Air Jamaica, recently they cut the loss making route to make it attractive to buyers and the government might have to do the lay off themselves to make it worth buying.
