  • Murder figures continue to climb

Murder figures continue to climb Monday, 09 February 2009 Despite a promise by the Police Commissioner of a 5% reduction in killings this year, the country's crime fighters continue to battle a spiralling murder rate.

Figures obtained by the RJR News Centre shows that 114 persons were murdered last month.

However, the figure is 26 less than the 140 murders recorded in January 2008.

A senior investigator told RJR News on Sunday night although the figure is less, compared to 2008--the number of murders recorded in January was still too high.

Nearly 30 persons have been murdered so far this month.

St. James, Clarendon, St. Andrew South and Spanish Town are the police divisions which had most of the murders.

Last year 1,611 persons were murdered.

It was the second highest number of murders recorded in the country's history.

            Very funny, Don1.

Seriously speaking, though, our politicians and other leaders (but politicians in particular as they alone have the power to make legislative changes in parliament and executive decisions in the cabinet) quite simply do not have the will to take the necessary strong steps to address this vexing issue of crime!

I’ve seen excellent crime fighting suggestions made on this forum, and so it is difficult for me to understand or excuse our governments’ lackadaisical approach over the years! D@mn it, they have the power to make changes!!

Yet we argue against making amendments to our Constitution that would allow Jamaicans living abroad to play a more decisive role (including leadership) in Jamaica’s affairs! Clearly the live-a-yard Jamaicans have been doing an incredibly poor job in every sphere of Jamaican life, and the time has arrived for radical changes to be made in the governance of my beloved country!!

We all know a few people who have been killed in Jamaica over the years. Until we give the average man/woman the means to defend himself/herself we will continue to have bloodletting in Jamaica.

Are you saying, supply the average man/woman with guns?

Isnt it strange that Lazie doesnt refer to this gov't as the "murder board" as he used to call the previous gov't. For the life of me I cant fathom how come. Any particular reason Lazie?

Why should the average man/woman be denied the ability to shoot back? I recommend everyone who has the means to buy a gun, to get one. We know the obvious conditions for a gun license, (1) mentally fit (2) no criminal record etc.
