  • Kingston gets first cruise ship for a very long time

Three hundred tourists this morning disembarked the Silversea – the first passenger cruise ship to call at Kingston's capital in a very long time, and the first organised specifically for cricket.

The visitors, the majority of which are English say they intend to spend the next three days soaking up the sun at Sabina Park in Kingston, while watching the West Indies' first test match against England. The ship with its more than 500 passengers will be docked at the Kingston Wharves, downtown Kingston for the next three days.

Former England fast bowler Darren Gough and batsman Allan Lamb were among the passengers who disembarked to a special welcome from a team of tourism officials led by tourism minister Edmund Bartlett and the group Nexus who performed a medley of folk songs.

The ship should have arrived yesterday for the second day of the test match however heavy snow in England delayed the trip by a day.

Drew Foster, head of International Travel Connections (ITC), the tour company which brought the cruise ship to Jamaica said that they have had other cruises going to Antigua and Barbados to watch cricket, but it is the first time that they have been visiting Kingston for this purpose.

Foster expressed a willingness to put Kingston on the itinerary of travels for future cricket events especially since he said they have never had such a great welcome in the other islands as they did in Jamaica.

Any day they fix up downtown kingston and stem the level of violence in Kingston, then Ochie, Mobay and Negril will be competing for second place as Jamaica's tourist capital. The potential of downtown Kingston and Port Royal is limitless. Kingston has the potential to become the Manhattan of the Caribbean. FULL STOP!!!!

you right on that. Port Royal and Kingston with trips to the Blue Mountains and proper roads to St.thomas and Portland yes it would be great.

One big difference is that Cancun is marketed as, well, Cancun! and Cozumel as Cozumel. The perception created is that it has little to do with the Mexico of drugs, border crossings, etc.

I have a friend who has a family business in the Negril and for years he has been saying that we need to differentiate the tourists areas in Jamaica more and market them as such. The experience of a Kingston tourist or even a Treasure Beach tourist is really different from a Negril tourist. We have that kind of diveristy in our culture and entertainment than no other island has.

A dream for those who would market!
An already strong brand, JAMAICA...on which NEGRIL (or Port Antonio, or Lucea...or Kingston...or...) to 'fly'!

That person in Negril made a great observation - Can be and should be done!

                  Big-up tuh im or er!

Here I come again with my casino talk. Jawge please do not read any further.

Can you imagine the financial potential of having about 4 to 5, Atlantic City-type casino hotels in St. Thomas? I strongly believe that the government should restrict issuing (the inevitable) casino gambling licences to the hoteliers located on the north and west coast of Jamaica. We need to diversify of tourist product and keep what we have in those areas as they are. The Jamaican governments throughout the years have been devoid of creative thinkers and have also lacked the will power and resolve to implement unpopular programs. Downtown Kingston and Port Royal are untapped gold/diamond mines that if developed can lead Jamaica out of poverty.

Kingston yesterday welcomed its first cruise ship in three years when Pullmantur’s cruise line’s, Monarch, docked in the city’s port with a little over 2,000 passengers aboard. The ship, which sailed from Cartagena, Colombia, was initially destined for Montego Bay, but had to stop in Kingston as the ports in Ocho Rios, Falmouth and Montego Bay were full. In Ocho Rios, the Norwegian Epic and Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess made calls, while Montego Bay will saw Thomson Dream and Aida Amar.
