Three hundred tourists this morning disembarked the Silversea – the first passenger cruise ship to call at Kingston's capital in a very long time, and the first organised specifically for cricket.
The visitors, the majority of which are English say they intend to spend the next three days soaking up the sun at Sabina Park in Kingston, while watching the West Indies' first test match against England. The ship with its more than 500 passengers will be docked at the Kingston Wharves, downtown Kingston for the next three days.
Former England fast bowler Darren Gough and batsman Allan Lamb were among the passengers who disembarked to a special welcome from a team of tourism officials led by tourism minister Edmund Bartlett and the group Nexus who performed a medley of folk songs.
The ship should have arrived yesterday for the second day of the test match however heavy snow in England delayed the trip by a day.
Drew Foster, head of International Travel Connections (ITC), the tour company which brought the cruise ship to Jamaica said that they have had other cruises going to Antigua and Barbados to watch cricket, but it is the first time that they have been visiting Kingston for this purpose.
Foster expressed a willingness to put Kingston on the itinerary of travels for future cricket events especially since he said they have never had such a great welcome in the other islands as they did in Jamaica.
