  • Air J workers threaten industrial action

The National Workers Union (NWU) said it will take protest action if Air Jamaica goes ahead with its plans to cut jobs and reduce its fleet as part of a major cost cutting exercise at the national carrier.
The union held a meeting with the workers on Monday night to discuss the situation at the airline.

Chief Negotiating Officer of the NWU Granville Valentine told the RJR News Centre the union is strongly opposed to the airline's business plan, which has been approved by the Cabinet.
According to Mr. Valentine, the workers have not been given an opportunity to put forward a counter-plan which could save the airline millions of dollars.

"Our findings have clearly indicated that what is happening at Air Jamaica continues to be mismanagement. They continue to misinform the public and mislead the workers. We have planned with other unions to have a major protest and a major march if needs be,"

"The Minister in charge, Minister [Don] Wehby and Minister [Dwight] Nelson have been talking with us and they have asked us to sit in a meeting to discuss the outstanding issue and clearly indicated that they will put the implementation on hold until those issues are discussed," said Mr. Valentine.

I recall (maybe it was last year) where a group from Air Jamaica went on strike for about 2 days complaining that they haven't seen a business plan. Once the plan was presented to them, they simply went back to work. No wonder Air Jamaica will not find a buyer. Its best if they simply pull the damn plug.

Since when its the role of the workers to put forward business plan? It simple, dem strike ... dem nuh come back.

Political pressure...but that type action will just close the airline earlier than the government had planned.

At last yuh say something with sense. Reps from the NWU get very vocal lately. On NNN yesterday Vincent Morrison and Michael Peart were on air discussing the closure of the bauxite plants. Peart was asked how he would have handle it differently and was struggling to give an answer like how Boxhill was struggling to manage the JFF. It was amusing to hear Morrison trying to bail him out.

Dem strike ... lock it down.

so you nuh think the workers a one a di reasons why the government want lock it down?

If them lock it down them can start up and pay new workers about 1/4 of the current salary. No politician or management have the balls to do what Delta or AA did by asking staff to take a pay cut.

Portia and Omar would manage it right?

thank god fi Audley Shaw cheap loan or we would have to declare bancruptcy as of December 2008.

Another case of one step forward, 10 steps backwards. As mi say before, who supported the incompetence all along should guh hold dem corner. I recall when Mark Golding, PoppyShow Portia and the rest was saying the gov't had no idea what to do. After presenting their stimulus plan, everybody got quiet. Is it enought? No. But the fact is because you and yuh unthinking comrades called incompetence "progress" there isn't much fiscal space to do much.

They may very well be a one term government, but their handling of the crisis so far is better than Portia and her crew would do. I am yet to hear any of them put forward a better plan.

Do you believe the PNP had a clue how to manage ?

Who has proven to be more clueless ?

                    (that is a rhetorical question)

                    You get the point.
