Last Sunday, I decided to drive from Duncans (Trelawny) to vist friends in Mandeville (Manchester).
These areas are known for the cultivation of Yam.
During my journey, I saw (maybe) thousands of wooden stakes used in yam cultivation. I wondered about the effects of deforestation....
A better and cost efficient way (I think)--would be the use of a synthetic replacement for the wooden stakes.
Two primary advantages to using a synthetic replacement would be:
1. Saving the Environment. The effects of deforestation is well known....
2. using synthetic stakes for growing yams will last for years and years....
I am aware that some Jamaican farmers are resistant to change. This "new" appraoch can be easily implemented by using the local Agricultural Extention Services. Experimental plots--using the new growing technique can be demonstrated.
