Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Reparation Commission which is to be chaired by Professor Barry Chevannes. The commission is being set up to examine the power of the Jamaican government to demand reparation for descendants of slaves.
Information Minister Olivia "Babsy" Grange told journalists at Wednesday's post cabinet press briefing that the commission will have 18 months to prepare a report that will be presented to Cabinet.
"So in the recommendations we are asking for the following to be established: that this commission will receive submissions, hear testimonies, evaluate research and studies, engage in dialogue with relevant interest groups and legal academic experts and undertake public consultations as necessary with a view to take a national approach," said Ms. Grange.
