There is a something to that from a general standpoint, but really it is just a lot of wishful thinking for the most part. He was the perfect combination of lucky, resourceful, right personality and temperament to win the dem primary, Hilary's team made a lot of mistakes, once he was the candidate it was almost a done deal, coming off Bush and republican poor track record and messups. McCain's age, his temperament, the economy, the choice of Palin it was just the perfect condition for an Obama to come in, without it , this would never have happened, it was a virtual lightning strike, no make that lighning striking multiple times in the same place (cannot be duplicated) it means nothing in the bigger context, it will give hope to some and may change some perceptions of the potential of African Americans at best, but bottom line is that black people have a long way to go in this country, nothing real for the masses will be achieved until the committment to education and learning becomes second nature across the board for the majority of the African american pop, right now that cis about 10-15 % in my estimnation if that, with this will come the ability to compete on all the various platforms of competition across the country. If you can't compete you get no respect.

As the lady on CNN say. there will be setbacks, but there is progress. 15 days after MLKs speech, there was a major set back and savage act.

I don't think there is anyone in America who thinks everything is wonderful with race relations in the country.

and in my view, that is why it has an ethereal sense of being pre-ordained. so many things had to come together at the same time for this previous unbelievable event to occur....

it is a multi headed hydra no doubt but the positive effect of it FAR outweighs anything else....can you imagine how far america would have been set back with mccain and palin in the whitehouse?!!!!

i agree he just wanted to be considered equal and capable .... content of character vs colour of skin ..... i think obama's election IS a step in that direction.

Though I agree that a lot of things had to happen in Obamas favor for him to win, i still think even 25 years ago the same conditions occuring WOULD NOT have produced the same result, and that to me shows that America has come a far way in terms of race relations.

Black people need to eliminate the cancer of anti-intellectual behaviour that infests the culture today.

That is a minority view Mo. Black people continue to suffer from high rates of poverty, unemployment, poor educational attainment, lack of access to healthcare, unequal justice and overt racism etc. Black people have a long way to go in America, but we should celebrate Obama becoming the first black president.

When people talk bout the inauguration being the realization of MLK's dream, they are referring to Obama's ascendancy to the presidency. We have not achieved MLK's dream of a color blind society.
