Must be a lot different. When you train an animal to be a winner, it better win! And if it don't...!

When you train a dog for security reasons, it's a lot different.

          DOG RACING TRIVIA
          • An average greyhound normally weighs between 65 to 75 pounds.
          • The greyhound is the fastest breed of dog. It can reach a top speed of 45 miles per hour and can average more than 30 miles per hour for distances up to one mile.
          • Throughout history, greyhounds have been bred to hunt by outrunning their prey. They were not intended to be solitary hunters, but to work with other dogs.
          • The pharaohs of ancient Egypt rated greyhounds first among all animals as their pets and hunters of choice. Their favorite hounds were known to have been mummified and buried along with them. As proof, pictures of these greyhounds can be found etched on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs.
          • The greyhound is the only canine mentioned in the Holy Scripture. It is cited in Proverbs 30:29-31.
          • In early Arabian culture, the birth of a greyhound ranked second only in importance to the birth of a son. So admired was the greyhound that it was the only dog they permitted to share their tents and ride atop their camels.
          • In 1014, King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws which stated that only noblemen were permitted to own and hunt with greyhounds. In fact, greyhound racing started in England as a sport strictly for nobility that could not be engaged in by commoners.
          • Many believe that the word "greyhound" is derived from the phrase "greatest hound" because the breed was so highly-respected in Europe. Others claim that it is derived from "Greek hound" because in ancient Greece, the greyhound was the most prized and respected of all animals.
          • In greyhound racing, the dogs are handicapped by grade. When a greyhound begins a racing career, it is classified as a maiden, which means a non-winner. It advances to grade C on its first win and with subsequent wins advances up the ladder to the top grade of A.
          • Most greyhounds begin racing at 18 months of age and continue until they are four years old.
          • Aside from determining the outcome in a photo finish, the plastic muzzle worn by greyhounds protects their nose from injury and prevents them from fighting in the heat of competition.
          • The colored blankets used during the races are keyed to the number and post positions of the greyhound. No. 1 is red; No. 2 is blue; No. 3 is white; No. 4 is green; No. 5 is black; No. 6 is yellow; No. 7 is green and white; No. 8 is black and yellow. At tracks with a No. 9, the greyhound wears purple and white.
          • By nature, greyhounds are not aggressive. While they are competitive during a race, they are also quite friendly and sociable. Once separated from the litter, those who do become household pets often thrive on human companionship.
          • The Earl of Oxford created the first public coursing club in 1776 in Swaffham in Norfolk, England. Greyhound coursing soon became very popular with the public.
          • Greyhound racing in America originated from competitions organized by farmers in the 1800s. In those days, greyhounds were used to control the jackrabbit population that wrought havoc to the crops.
          • Around 1912, Owen Patrick Smith invented the mechanical lure. He opened the first greyhound track in Emeryville, California. Six years later he owned 25 tracks around the nation, including ones in Florida, Montana, and Oregon.

            DOG RACING HISTORY
The greyhound arrived in Europe more than 3,500 years ago. In 1014, King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws, which stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds.
In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I abolished this law and later initiated the first formal rules of greyhound coursing. Thus, greyhound or dog racing became known as the "Sport of Queens."
In the early 1900s, huge crowds would gather to watch greyhound coursing. In the interest of safety, enclosed courses were introduced. These enclosed courses were much smaller than the open courses and speed over agility was of utmost importance.
It was just a matter of time before racing would take over from the well established coursing.
On July 24, 1926, in front of 1,700 spectators, seven Greyhounds leapt out of the traps at Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium and raced to catch an electric hare. This marked the first ever modern dog race in England.
Soon after, dog racing tracks sprung up all over the United Kingdom and dog racing was firmly established in the sporting scene.
Meanwhile, In the late 1800's, American farmers imported greyhounds to help curb the multiplying jackrabbit population. Because of the greyhound's speed and natural instincts, they became the focus of popular neighborhood competitions. These informal matches were the first organized dog racing events.
On 1919, the first dog racing track was opened in Emeryville, California.
Today, dog racing is the sixth largest spectator sport in America. It is legal in 20 states including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Nevada and South Dakota do not offer live greyhound racing, but allow wagering on simulcasts.

              DOG RACING
The dogs chase a "hare", a mechanical lure usually made of artificial bone. The hare starts about half a circuit behind the start. When it passes a point near the starting traps, it automatically triggers the gate, releases the greyhounds and the race begins. Should the greyhounds catch or overtake the hare, the race is declared void.
In the US, there are about 40 dog racing tracks operating in 12 different states. In England, there are approximately 30 dog racing stadiums.
In the US, dogracing wagers, like horse racing wagers, are referred to as Pari-Mutuel, meaning "to wager amongst ourselves" in French. American dog racing fans bet against and amongst one another, not against the dog racing track. Wagers, of a particular type, are placed together in a pool; taxes and a house take are removed, and payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all placed bets.
In England, dog racing wagers are like sport wagers which have fixed odds. For example, the odds of greyhound #1 finishing first is at 4/1 (read "four-to-one" or "four-to-one against"). If greyhound #1 crosses the finish line first, the bettor makes a £400 profit on a £100 wager.
Pari-Mutuel betting differs from fixed odds betting in that the final payout is not determined until betting into the pool is closed. In fixed odds betting, the payout is agreed at the time the bet is placed.
The challenge of betting on dog races is to collect and analyze information and then make a sound judgment on which dog to bet on, what type of bet to place and how much to bet.
There is obviously no guaranteed way of finding winners, but for a newcomer to dog racing, the task must seem quite intimidating. Six dogs may all seem the same to the novice but there are many factors to take into consideration before risking any hard earned money.
Over the years, there have been all sorts of so called fail-proof winning statistical systems but the only way one can realistically hope to show a profit in dog racing is to study each and every dog race card in any given race.

Went to a dog racing track in Orlando FL. a few months ago. I had a good time! Would do it again!

My concern is the same a mentioned below i.e: the ethical treatment of the dogs during and after their productive years.

Jamaica is no claim to regulatory prowess.
