Seized money placed in government coffers
More than half a million US dollars seized from three passengers at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James has been placed into the Government's Consolidated Fund.
The money was seized from the passengers who were searched by agents of the Customs Department.
Jamaican law requires that passengers declare funds exceeding US$10,000.
They were unable to offer a reasonable explanation as to the source of the money or why they failed to declare it to Customs.
The money was seized under the Proceeds of Crimes Act.
This is the 136th seizure that has been paid over to the Crown by the Customs Department since June of last year.
Criminal investigations against the passengers are continuing.
