  • Shaggy - A Man To Be Respected!

It's difficult to put into words the immense admiration and respect that I've developed over the years for Orville "Shaggy" Burrell. He is indeed someone to be emulated!

Orville 'Shaggy' Burrrell's latest drive to help the Bustamante Hospital for Children has made a big impression on the men and women who work there daily.

Nurse Vevein Bowen commended Burrell for his philanthropic efforts after staging a concert a week ago that raised $27 million for the hospital's development.

"Well, to me the feeling is beyond words to explain how I feel. There is so much joy, so much fun and this thing that Shaggy did for us and the children is just perfect," said Bowen, who works in the operating theatre at the hospital.

"The entire hospital will benefit from this so much. This is not the first time that Shaggy has donated, yes, but it is one of the biggest and it gathers more funds to buy more machine," she added.

Even though Bowen was not at the show, she made every use of the video footage at a press conference held at the hospital on Thursday.
"I wasn't there because we (the nurses) were on duty and that made us miss the show, but we call this our 'platinum ticket' to be here, so we are having fun now," stated Bowen.

Dr Lambert Innis, head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, said with Shaggy's benevolence, he wishes nothing but the best for him in his career.

"I pray and ask God to bless Shaggy and make him prosperous because I don't think I've come across anyone else who has, in such a short time, demonstrated that they truly care to make a difference and that their actions say a lot about what is in their hearts," he said. "That says a lot about Shaggy to me."

He continued, "We at the Bustamante Hospital for Children are extremely grateful and happy for the effort and the work that has been done by Shaggy and friends and to say a big thank you to the public for the tremendous support that I saw on Saturday at the concert. I think it was a great success."

    no decision on spending
Dr Innis told The Sunday Gleaner that a decision is yet to be made about how the money will be spent. He explained that the senior management officials for the hospital will have to prioritise the needs. He elaborated that areas have been identified and that the costs of these will be determined.

Dr Innis pointed out the Intensive Care Unit and the operating theatre, the Nursery and the accident and emergency department are those that need immediate attention. The Bustamante Hospital, according to Dr Innis, is the referral hospital for the entire country, a specialist hospital that also functions as a teaching hospital.

Joan Aitkens, whose child is diagnosed with cancer and is being treated at the hospital, said Shaggy's generosity was timely as the hospital was suffering from a lack of equipment.

"I think it was a good idea, because I have a daughter who is diagnosed with cancer and right now they need more doctors. My child is here from Tuesday and have yet to receive any treatment. I don't think they have enough doctors,"Aitkens told The Sunday Gleaner.

"So for Shaggy putting on this concert was a great effort to improve the equipment in the hospital and this cause will definitely help the doctors who really need the machines to operate with."

Another parent who also praised Shaggy was Angela Phang; she was outside waiting to congratulate him. She said the donation had warmed the hearts of many who will benefit from it.
"It's a wonderful thing that he has done and a lot of parents are here waiting to congratulate him. I hope others will join him and help the children. So on behalf of the parents who don't see him to thank him, Shaggy we love you," said Phang.
