  • Gov’t to press on with railway plans

Despite the challenges facing Jamaica in the wake of the global financial meltdown, the Government is going ahead with plans for major development projects.

They include the long-awaited revitalisation of the railway service.

Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry said he is in the process of making a submission to Parliament.

During his contribution to the Sectoral Debate last year, Mr. Henry disclosed that the Chinese Government will be involved in the construction of 18 new railway stations, and the provision of five new engines.

Railway systems are VERY expensive to build and VERY expensive to maintain and operate. I would like the Gov't to be a little innovative and NOT purchase diesel engines, but rather consider alternative fuels (bio-diesel etc) for the engines.

I agree with you Gamma. I remember back in the late 80's when I used to take the train into Kingston from Spanish Town, there were literally thousands of commuters on those trains. After the service was discontinued, the buses sardine cans on wheels. I just cannot understand why successive governments found it so hard to reimplement and upgrade the service. It's really a no-brainer given the high road fatalities.
