SEIZED: The high-powered Ruger machine gun seized by police on Monday....

A MAN from Jamaica was arrested after police raided a house in San Juan and recovered a high-powered machine gun. Police said the Ruger firearm was found with a magazine loaded with 17 bullets.
Police also recovered 25 rounds of .22 ammunition near the firearm.

The High Performance Team (HPT) of officers led by Cpl Wayne Praimdass and including PCs Rainy Dhil and Kaleem Jamaldin were involved in the exercise which netted the gun.

According to a police report, at about 4 pm on Monday, the HPT officer received information and went to Laventille Road, Febeau Village in San Juan, where they executed a warrant on the Jamaican who was alone in the house.

Police sources revealed that although the .22 ammunition is rarely used in the commission of crimes, the Ruger machine gun may have been used in several criminal activities.

The items were tagged and sent to the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park, St James for tests.

The 37-year-old Jamaican was expected to be charged late yesterday with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Up to late yesterday, investigators were busy checking the background of the suspect with their Interpol counterparts. Investigations are continuing.

Acting Commissioner of Police (CoP) James Philbert has made the seizure of illegal firearms and ammunition one of his major crime-fighting priorities since, he said, illegal firearms account for a large number of murders recorded and are also used to commit robberies, kidnappings and other criminal activities

Trinidad: Bomb Suspect Proclaims His Innocence

We reported earlier on the case of 68-year old Lenville Small, who was suspected of being involved with four bombs which happened between July and September on Trinidad, in and around Port of Spain, the capital.
Lenvile Small was released on 1 December after being held in police custody since his arrest on Saturday November 19th.

70 year old Lancelot Small is currently in Florida, serving a sentence of twelve year's jail, imposed this August for gun-trafficking. He was found guilty of conspiring to import into Trinidad and Tobago sixty AK-47 assault rifles, and ten Mac-10 machine guns with silencers. Lancelot Small had been involved with the coup of 1990, when Yasin Abu Bakr attempted to overthrow the government. 20 people died as a result of the insurrection.
