Crime down in Portland Monday, 15 December 2008 At a time when the rest of the country is grappling with the spiralling crime figures, one section of the island with the lowest level of crime is hoping to reduce its numbers to zero for 2009.

on serious crimes in the parish for next year.
Mr. Thompson, a retired PoliceComissioner, who was addressing the Portland Lay Magistrate's Association, praised the parish's 185 Lay Magistrates for their role in assisting the police to keep serious crime at a low level by counseling prisoners and other offenders.
He said the police and residents of Portland should be justly proud for reducing the level of crime this year and urged that a zero tolerance approach be adopted to bring the low murder rate to zero in 2009.
With a population of 85,000, Portland has had only 10 murders so far this year, most of them domestic.
No children have been hurt or killed and all missing persons have been safely recovered.
