  • Chicken growers concerned about poultry imports

    Posted: 2008-12-11 09:28:07

The National Poultry Growers Cooperative Society has raised concerns over a decision by the government to offer licences for the importation of chicken parts.

President of the cooperative society Dean Lee says the importation of any type of meat into the country will have a severe negative impact on the poultry industry.

Mr Dean says the agriculture minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, should reconsider the decision to offer the licence for importation.

According to Mr Dean, the poultry industry has been producing enough meat and can meet the demands in the country.

The agriculture minister has announced that plans are in place to import chicken parts to supply the expected demand for the product over the Christmas season.

Dr. Tufton says the decision is based on data collected from industry members.

Are these people comparing their figures? The chicken providers are saying they have enough chicken to meet the demand. If this is so, then they have every right to be upset.

Then again, is this a means to address the high prices?
