post-colonial African leaders. And given Africas leadership record this is no small accomplishment.

Why are African success stories so rare, 50+ years now since the beginning of the end of European colonization? Really, why? It is one thing to be a poor but developing nation, but it seems like total breakdown of society is always a very real possibility in sub-Saharan African nations.

Armored cars patrolled the streets of Zimbabwe's capital and residents flocked to banks Thursday after limits on cash withdrawals were lifted in the inflation-ravaged African nation.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had capped maximum daily withdrawals at 500,000 Zimbabwean dollars -- about 25 U.S. cents, and about a quarter of the price of a loaf of bread. But faced with mounting chaos in a country already in economic free fall, the bank decided last week to raise that limit to 100 million dollars ($50 U.S.) per week.

Soldiers were deployed to all banks in anticipation of throngs of people lining up to withdraw money Thursday, when the increase took effect. Wednesday, police chased depositors away and arrested union leaders who planned to protest the limits.

Zimbabwe's inflation rate of 231 million percent is the world's highest.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions said 69 people were arrested across the country during Wednesday's demonstrations. Amnesty International has demanded to know the whereabouts of human rights activist Jestina Mukoko. The group said Mukoko was abducted at dawn Wednesday by armed men in plainclothes posing as police.

And angry, unpaid soldiers clashed with foreign currency exchangers and some civilians Monday, three days after troops who had failed to get cash from their banks looted shops they suspected to be illegally dealing in foreign currency

On one hand you could say it is the only country in the world that has only millionaires living there...

The African Union & the south africans stood on the sideline and watched their neighbor descend into chaos. Just throw in a few guns & you have another Somalia.

They can recover after they rid themselves of Mugabe. Uganda has rebounded well after Amin.

And people cry down America...I am not a big fan of America but I like the two term limit on Presidents; could you imagine another four years of Bush?..and yet Zim has had Mugabe since 1980 at which time he was seen as their "Joshua"...his star has certainly fallen from grace since then...I remember when he came to power, the hope, optimism and pride of Zimbabweans I knew at university...

Our parliamentary system and constitution should prohibit these people from becoming maximum leaders... the country becomes nothing more than their private dominion and the people placed back in bondage...

Yes they can recover eventually but so much valuable time is lost while the rest of the world moves further ahead. This tendency to easily fall into chaos is the tragedy of so many African countries, post-colonialism. Look at Kenya, a fairly stable country for decades and now people are on the verge of starvation.

Mugabe is the worst case I have seen of a promising leader gradually descending into a paranoid and evil criminal. If ever there was a case of absolute power corrupting, this is it.

Where are the forumites who stoutly defended Mugabe, particularly with regard to his land reclamation?

Looks like the army is finally starting to turn against the govt. So far its the rank and file members that are rioting and looting, but it may be a signal to some of the more senior officers who are thinking about taking over.

This is looking more and more like it could end in a lot of bloodshed and another military coup.
