Despite financial challenges, the prison work programme is saving Government money.
June Jarrett, Acting Commissioner of Corrections says since the programme began in November 2007, inmates have provided free manual labour on several key projects.
According to Mrs. Jarrett, one recent success story is the bushing of the area surrounding the Cumberland High School in St. Catherine, which had become a haven for criminals.
"The inmates were taken out there and within six days, they completed the entire work that was to be done in terms of bushing ... the estimate given to the Council by the contractor was $2 million and it only cost the department $226,000 to complete a $2 million project ... do you understand the benefits that can be reaped by using our inmates to do the work out there?"
Acting Commissioner of Corrections Jarrett was speaking on Television Jamaica's morning programme Smile Jamaica on Tuesday.
The inmates have also been responsible for the painting and repairing of schools, maintenance of the May Pen Cemetery and other civil parks and projects.
