I heard a story, second-hand, about a Trini student who went to study at Mona this year. She has now returned to T&T for fear of being raped and for her life.

The story goes that gangs operating around UWI (August Town? Elletson Flats?Papine?) are demanding "protection money" from the University, which apparently had been paying this money out. The gangs raised the "protection fee" and the University has refused to pay it. In retribution for non-payment the gangs are said to be on a raping spree stating that they were going to target 15 women a month.

Is there any truth to this? Is this kind of organized attack in fact being perpetuated upon UWI? Can anyone shed some light?

    Thanks.

Haven't heard this story but it certainly could be true. Those areas have long plagued the university and other communities. I guess the peace treaty signed by August Town residents does not have any bearing on their relationship with neighbouring communities.

Places like August Town are notorious for sending out their criminal gangs to torment good, law-abiding citizens. They then take refuge in August Town after the dastardly deed is done. Grants Pen is another such community, then they boast about how safe their own community is.

I find it is too easy to enter the university. I can drive up there whenever I want as that card thing they give you does not prevent you from doing all sorts of illegal things. The dorms themselves are much safer, indeed, very, very safe, but getting to the dorm can be a bit tricky.

August Town and those communities around the university need a good police/soldier raid every week! But can they do that and not abuse the good people of those communities?

    sigh

the good people of the community, who, as a community harbour these thugs? those who know and say nothing are just as complicit as those who actually put them up and feed them!

fear is a dread thing. i would like to think that some of them would love to report the thugs but fear what might happen if they are found out.

My daughter is at UWI and she says there is fear of attacks. ...and there have been attacks! The students try to move around in large groups. Not always possible. She used to take the bus...had to change to her driving. The wait at bus stops is now extremely dangerous. There have been attacks on students who move about on foot to and from the bus stops and about the campus!

Thanks...for joining me in advocating that the cops "lean" on relatives and neighbours of criminals!

...when are you coming over to DISARM and BUD time?

So, does Karl think the police have not adopted that position from ever since?! That is not something novel!

They could not have been doing that and we still have the criminality soaring at the pace at which it is soaring!
