'I have overseas commitments'
Simpson Miller to miss Parliament tomorrow
Monday, November 24, 2008
Opposition leader Portia Simpson Miller says she will not be in Parliament tomorrow when House members are expected to cast conscience votes on the retention of the death penalty.
"Unfortunately I will be off the island on Tuesday," Simpson Miller disclosed at the People's National Party's National Executive Council meeting held yesterday at the Vere Technical High School in Clarendon.
She suggested that Prime Minister Bruce Golding set a date for the vote "so that all House members can be present".
"If it's necessary that all members of parliament must be present, then I believe the decision will have to be taken that a date be set and communicated to everybody that this is the day when we are going to vote," Simpson Miller said.
Golding last Wednesday was forced to delay the vote until tomorrow to facilitate more Members of Parliament being present. Only 45 members of the 60-seat House was present at the time. Simpson Miller was among the absentees.
